VA boosts health services for women vets - Orlando Sentinel
Almost every day, Lisa Martel gets a call from a female veteran who has recently moved to Central Florida and is looking for health care.
"We're just growing by leaps and bounds," said Martel, Women Veteran Program Manager at Orlando VA Medical Center.
Women are the fastest-growing group within the veteran population, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. They make up about 10 percent of the total veteran population in Florida and around the nation, and their number is expected to grow to more than 16 percent by 2043.
This growth not only means an increasing need for services that are specific to women, but also a shift in the culture of an environment that's been historically dominated by male patients.
"Part of my job is to help our patients understand what services we offer but also to educate the staff in the terms of the needs of the patients," Martel said.
That includes holding health fairs, like the one the clinic had earlier this month on its Lake Nona campus, to let patients know what services are available at the VA; and training sessions with the staff, especially those who have been in the system for a long time and don't have much experiencing treating female patients.
"Sometimes it's just helping the staff understand that we don't want to make the assumption that [the patient on the chart] is always a man," Martel said.
With 150,000 female veterans, Florida has the third-largest population of female veterans behind California and Texas. There are about 26,000 female veterans here in Central Florida, 9,000 of whom currently seek care at the Orlando VA Medical Center.
The medical center opened a Women's Health Center in its new facility in Lake Nona in September 2015, adding to the existing services offered in Lake Baldwin.
The clinic provides comprehensive medical care, from primary care to mental health care, pharmacy and specialized surgeries such as hysterectomies, under one roof.
"[Female veterans] go through a lot of stuff both psychologically and physically, so we don't want them to hop around VA for care," said Dr. Quratulann Iftikhar, the team leader of Women's Health.
The Orlando VA also is aiming to make the presence of female-designated providers more ubiquitous.
There are currently two such providers in each of Orlando VA's women's health centers, and five in Lake Nona's general primary-care clinic.
"Our overall goal is to have at least two designated woman health providers at each of our outpatient clinics and to build our women's health programming," Martel said.
The medical center has also brought in two new female gynecologists, to add to its two existing male gynecologists. They can treat pelvic pain, urinary incontinence and perform surgeries.
"There's definitely a change in the mentality in patients," said Dr. Melissa Hartman, a women's health primary care provider at the Women's Health Center in Lake Nona. "The older patients were so used to seeing male providers and the younger generation is asking more and more for the female provider."
According to national data, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, hypertension and depression are the most common diagnoses among female veterans.
Meanwhile, one in five or as many as three in four female veterans, depending on the source of data -- have experienced military sexual trauma.
"There are some who prefer not to talk about it and a lot of times those symptoms of MST come out in physical ways and that's why it's important for their providers to understand symptoms and understand how it can manifest both physically and emotionally and provide that safe environment to talk about it," said Martel.
